Try a three-value thumbnail

Open a small canvas and choose just three values: light, middle and dark. Draw a simple scene using broad shapes. Keep the canvas small enough that you cannot spend the whole session on tiny details.

Make two more versions by moving the largest dark shape or changing the balance of light and dark. View the thumbnails together at the same size. Notice which arrangement makes the subject easiest to read.

Save all three with a brief note. A thumbnail is a place to test an idea, not a miniature finished illustration. You can develop the most useful arrangement in a separate file.
